Imagine the time before mobile phones, radio or television. In those days if you wanted to talk over distances you might use signal fires or flash sunlight with a mirror.

The best system available was probably semaphore. This was based on making a pattern with flags. Two trained people could keep in touch over several miles. If a large signalling machine was used the distances might be a lot greater.
