The Torquay Directory observed Lee's strange attitude in Court: 'The behaviour of the prisoner all through the case has been one of supreme indifference; indeed, at times, he has recognised his acquaintances in Court and winked and nodded in a manner as if then charge against him was one of a most trivial character instead of one which imperilled his life'.
